Field of Honor

The Butte Exchange Club hosted the 2011 Field of Honor where visitors beheld a beautiful display of 1,000 U.S. Flags with the Highland Mountains and the Belmont Mine Headframe as magnificent  backdrops.  These 3’x5’ flags stood 8’ tall in perfect rows from July 7 to July 10, 2011 at Continental Drive and Mercury Streets in Butte, Montana.

This temporary display served as a tribute to the strength and unity of Americans, veterans; currently serving military, first responders, law enforcement, personal heroes and victims of child abuse in Montana.

On August 23 the Exchange Club announced that the Field of Honor project generated $39,000 in net proceeds. Six hundred of the flags were sponsored with donations and the sponsored flags were tagged with the name of the donor and the honoree. “Each tag told a story. And we were humbled and honored that so many visitors to the Field of Honor shared their stories with us.” said Lauren Kippen, co-Chairman of the project. “For many, the Field of Honor provided a place to remember loved ones and heal. At times the emotions were overwhelming.”

Prior to the event the Exchange Club had selected several local non-profit organizations to receive net proceeds from the event. On August 23 checks were presented to each of these groups. Those who sponsored flags could designate that their donation go to a specific organization, otherwise the proceeds were divided evenly. The check amounts were; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Butte received $9,430, Butte Rescue Mission received $10,080, Butte Family YMCA received $9,330, and the United Veterans Council received $10,160.

“The Exchange Club wants to express our appreciation to the Event Sponsors, Flag Sponsors and the hundreds of volunteers who helped make this project such a success. We are delighted that this project generated so much interest and that these generous donations were raised for these worthwhile organizations.” said Cindy Farrar, co-Chairman of the project.
